Reminder: everyone in the 17-18 show choirs (NL and SL) are to be measured for their costumes TODAY before 7pm (incoming freshmen can be fitted by 7:30pm). If you haven’t already come for your fitting, please do so now!
Yesterday, three of our choirs competed at Chesterton Middle School at the ISSMA State Concert Choir Qualifications. It was a successful day for all groups!
Varsity Lights, in their first appearance at State Quals, received a GOLD rating from all judges. They even scored a half-point from PERFECT in Sight Reading!!!
Starlights received a GOLD rating from all judges. We have just received word that they were among the TOP 8 single-gender choirs in the state and will be competing this Friday evening at the ISSMA Concert Choir State Finals @ Pike High School!!
Lyric Lights received a GOLD rating from all judges. We have also just received word that they were among the TOP 16 mixed choirs in the state and will be competing this Saturday afternoon/evening at the ISSMA Concert Choir State Finals @ Pike High School!
Additionally, Chamber lights and Radiance received GOLD RATINGS FROM ALL JUDGES at Organizational last week. This marks the 4th year in a row that ALL CHOIRS FROM NHS have received Gold Ratings from ISSMA at their spring festivals/contests. Way to go!!
We are so proud of all of our students. Performance schedules/call times/etc. for State Finals next week will be given to the students as soon as we can. Thank you for all your support, and congrats to ALL of our students and to Starlights and Lyric Lights for being State Finalists!
State Quals is this Saturday @ Chesterton MS!!! We are excited to bring 3 choirs with us this year! That’s 124 choral students! Attached is a schedule for the day. The students will be meeting at the high school, then riding buses over to Chesterton. Please note the time change on the schedule.
ATTENTION VL PARENTS: On Friday, we handed out about 25 Field Trip Request Forms to students that have not yet turned them in. If I don’t have them ASAP, they will not be allowed to ride the bus on Saturday. If you are not sure whether you have turned one in yet or not, first ask your son if he received on from me on Friday. They are on red paper. You can also print one out below.
FINALLY: We will be having a community preview show This Thursday night @ 7:30 in the auditorium. Admission is FREE. All 3 groups will be performing their sets. We hope to see you there!
It will be very important to have as many people at Chesterton MS on Saturday to cheer on our students. State Qualifications have gotten tougher and tougher, and we need all the support we can get. We look forward to seeing you there!
Mr. Barker and Mrs. Yoder
Get some rest and get ready for Dr. Hochstetler tomorrow! No SL rehearsal tonight!
With State Quals being only two weeks away and us having a lot of work to do with very little time left, we are going to do everything we can to make this competition set the best it can be. This means we need to hold each other accountable for knowing our part in Alleluia inside and out.
During the first part of next week, I will be hearing you in small groups of 8-11 people on this piece. You will only be graded on the following:
- Do you know your notes and rhythms?
- Are you in tune?
- Is it memorized?
You will NOT be graded on the claps and dynamics, as we will be spending class time to learn the claps and work phrasing with the full ensemble.
You will find your group assignment in the document attached at the end of this post. You and your group are responsible for signing up for a half hour time slot together. Available times are included in that document as well. Sign ups will begin Monday in class. If you are in groups 1, 2, or 3, you will sign up first, as those groups include our spring athletes and their seasons are going on at the same time as this.
During this half hour rehearsal with me, our goal will be to make sure each person has his/her part down and in tune. This is a 100 point grade that is simply Pass or Fail. I will hear students again on Thursday afternoon, Friday before and after school, and into the next week if needed to make sure everyone passes. Note that if you pass the first time, you will not need to sing again.
Practice files for Alleluia have been uploaded to the Lyric Lights page in the Student Files section of the website. There is also a PDF of the score in case you forgot to bring your music home and want to work on it over the weekend.
All the top choirs in the state do this at some point. Now it’s our turn. I am not trying to add extra stress to your schedules….my hope is that a half hour in these small groups outside of class will prevent us from needing to add extra rehearsals as a full group. You have my word that I will do everything I can to get us where we need to be so that we leave the stage on the 29th with NO REGRETS.
If you have any questions, or your group communicates over the weekend and decides on a time to rehearse with me, feel free to send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thank you all….we can do this!
Attention all NL students/parents: There will be NO NL practice this evening. We will resume practices next Monday (6:30-9:30). It will be very important for all students to arrive on time (early) and be focused throughout these last rehearsals. If a student misses any part of rehearsals because of conflicts communicated with Mr. Barker, it will be his/her responsibility to be fully caught up by the next rehearsal.
Rehearsals this week are as follows:
Monday 4/10 – NL 7-9
Thesday 4/11 – SL 6:30-8:30
The Calendar tab has been updated to reflect these hanged and students should have received a text message alerting them to this adjustment. Thank you!
